Our History

December 1, 1975

Our 17 founding mothers established the first Latina based sorority at Kean University. These amazing women sought to create a space where Latina women can succeed in higher education. Prior to this time, Latina women were expected to comply with the machismo stereotype, but times were changing. More and more Latina women pursued higher education but they felt a lack of support. And so, our founding mothers came together as an academic sorority to uplift those on their higher education journey and contribute to their community through social, political, and community service.

Principles are Unity, Love, and Respect

Founders

May 11, 2019

14 Founding Sisters had a vision to establish a Lambda Theta Alpha chapter at UC San Diego. With an underrepresented population of the Latinx community, they unified with the purpose to provide a community for everyone. After over 2 years as potential candidates, they founded Eta Gamma Chapter in Spring 2019.

WHY LTA?

We pride ourselves on being the first Latina sorority, but “We are Latin by tradition, not by definition.” We welcome those who share our values and those who seek community. Coming to UC San Diego as a freshman or transfer student, many experience a culture shock. However, we hope to be a resource to you. We study together to keep us motivated. We serve our community because we understand the importance of giving back. All of us at Eta Gamma Chapter desire to succeed academically, while also gaining valuable skills and experiences through our activities within LTA. We are motivated and we are always thinking of new ways to connect and engage our community. We are recently established and there is much to be done. Will you be apart of our journey?
